Alma E. "Via" Hebrew
(14 Oct 1896 - )
Alma E. Hebrew was born October 14, 1896 at Lometa, Texas. At an early
age, her family moved by covered wagon to Ford County, Kansas. Here she met
Irl K. Stanton and on February 12, 1919 they were married.
After he was mustered out of the Army in March of that year, they came to
Montana, arriving in Miles City in the middle of a big snow storm. They
remained in Miles City for three days waiting for the storm to subside. They
started their trek to Jordan in a touring car and when the snow got too deep
for it to travel, they made the rest of the journey in a wagon. Irl's dad met
them in Jordan with a pair of mules and a "pung". (A pung was the front part
of a sled.)
They settled on Irl's homestead which is still owned by her son, Glenn.
They farmed and ranched there until Irl's sudden death in 1944. Besides Glenn,
they have a daughter, Dora Jahnke, who now lives in Troy, Montana.
After the death of her husband, the ranch was turned over to Glenn. He
married Jessie Shawver, and as Via felt they could care for the ranch, she
returned to Kansas where she took care of her mother until 1956 when she re-met
and married "Curley" Cooper and they came back to Montana. She and Glenn had
purchased the Joe Spracklin place and she and Curley lived there for about 12
years. Through drought, bad weather, etc, they managed to raise flowers and a
garden that made the neighbors envious. In their spare time, they did alot of
fishing. The grandcholdren and all the neighbor children were always ready to
jump in with them at a moment's notice and accompany them on their fishing
excursions. They were ready to help a neighbor at all times and were more than
willing to help in any community project.
In 1969 Via decided it was time for them to "slow down" a little so they
moved to Buhl, Idaho where most of "Curley's" kids were living. Here they
bought a small place where they could still garden, raise flowers and lots of
berries. They were enjoying their retirement to the fullest until Curley
passed away in 1974.
The following summer, Via decided to move back to her old friends and
purchased a small house in Jordan. Here, she once more turned her yard into a
flower garden, and she had her grandchildren to enjoy. She attended senior
citizens and enjoyed her afternoons of playing cards and visiting. In 1987 her
health started to fail. Her daughter, Dora moved to Jordan to stay with her
for a few months, but later in the year, they both moved to Troy where she
lived until just recently when Dora was no longer able to care for her and she
came back to live in the Health Center in Jordan.
