Sgt. Brunner Is Awarded DFC For Unusual Achievement
Scott Field, Ill.--T/Sgt. Milford G. Brunner, 24, son of Mrs. M. A. Brunner, 401 N. 3rd St., Stillwater, Minn., was presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross during ceremonies at Scott Field, Ill., parent radio school of the AAF training command, where Sgt. Brunner is now stationed. The presentation was made by Col. F. F. Chrstine, an overseas veteran of World War I.
Mrs. Brunner, the former Louella Grady, for the duration is residing in Hudson with her sister, Mrs. Dana Foss.
Sgt. Brunner was awarded the DFC "for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight against the enemy in the North Africa and Mediteranean theatres of operations. Throughtout the extensive air offensive against the enemy in the direct support of our ground troops and against targets of vital strategic importance deep within hostile territory, the personnel, through their aggressiveness and courage, have consistently aided in the success of combat operations. Against heavy opposition from both aggressive and persistent fighter aircraft and intense, heavy and accurate enermy anti-aircraft fire, with their planes frequently seriously damaged by enemy fire, they have battled their way through their targets, defeating the enemy in the air and destroying his vital installations on the gorund...Their conspicuous and outstanding achievements in these many missions against the enemy have upheld the highest traditions of the military service, thereby reflecting great credit upon themselves and the armed forces of the United States of America."
The sergeant, who also holds the Air Medal with three oak-leaf clusters, was a radio-gunner on a B-24 in Africa and Italy and flew on 51 missions with 241 combat hours.
