He was born as Leonard Frederick Dexter. Sometime about 1925-1926 his name was changed to John Alexander Dew. His son Garry Charles Melvin Dew has confirmed this is true. No one still living in 2020 knows why the name change occurred.
Leonard was at Fort Collins, Colorado at the same time as another person named John Alexander Dew was there. Leonard married Georgia Hewitt while at Fort Collins. Georgia was from New York state. She and Leonard moved to New York where they had two sons. The marriage failed. Leonard changed his name to John Alexander Dew and married about 1925 to Marguerite Hall.
