John Greenwell

(1625 - 30 Mar 1658)

At age 15 he was transported to Maryland to be an indentured servant to lawyer Edward Hall.

Wife to be in charge of estate until son afsd. comes of age; shd. sd. son die during minority, 1/3 of estate is bequeathed to overseers, Capt. Wm. Evans and James Langworth, and residue disposed of to pious uses, as for the relief of poor Catholic children and the like.

April 1 John Greenwell's Will: In the name of God Amen. I John Greenewell of New Towne in the Province of Maryland, being very sick of Body, but in perfect memory (thanks bee gyven to Allmighty God) doe make & ordaine this my last will & Testamt as followcth. Impe I bequeath my Soule to Allmty god my Creator & Redeemer; And my Body to the earth, to be decently buryed.
It. I give unto my loving Sonne James Greenewell (whom I make my Exequutoe after my debts & funerall charges are payd) all my whole Estate, Except these following Legacyes.
I give unto my loving Wffe Bridgett Greenewell all her wearing cloathes her bed & furniture; halfe the stock of hoggs; halfe the Steeres & fower Cowes. And the managing of the whole Estate untill my Sonne comes of Age. If my Overseers shall soe thinke fitt.
It. I give unto my God-daughter Anna Warren a Cow calfe.
It. I give unto Mr ffitzherbert a hogshead of Tob. in testimony That I dye a Roman Catholique.
It. I make & ordaine my two loving freinds Capt Willm Evans & Mr James Langworth to bee Ovrseers to my Child, And in case my Child dye before he comes to age. I give unto the Overseers One third part of his Estate betwixt them, And the rest to be disposed of to pious uses: as for the releffe of poore Catholique Children & the like.

At age 15 he was transported to Maryland to be an indentured servant to lawyer Edward Hall.
John Greenwell, born ca 1625 possibly near Durham, England (seat of the Greenwell family), immigrated to America as an indentured servant to Edward Hall in 1640 & probably served seven years. On Sept 29, 1649 John received "his marke for cattell & Hoggs viz; The left Eare slitt & the right Eare a peice cut out over and under". He acquired land from John Piles in the Newtown area of St Mary's County, MD, referred to as "Piles Woodland" (or Greenhill) located on east side of Bretton Bay at the head of Knevets Creek in Newtown Hundred.

John Greenwell married 1st: ca 1650 to Mary Knowland (born ca 1626 England), who died soon after their only child. James, was born.
John sent to England for his 2nd wife, Bridgett Seaborn (born ca 1625). John rec'd credit for transporting her to the Colony in 1654.
John was a planter and a Catholic. He died in 1658 (will dated 3/27/1658, will probated 4/3/1658). He willed his entire estate "Piles Woodland" to son, James, and legacies to wife Bridgett, a god-daughter, Anna Warren, and & Mr. FitzHerbert. His wife was to be in charge of the estate until James became of age. "should he die during his minority, 1/3 of the estate was to be bequeasted to overseers, Capt Evans and James Longworth & the residue to pius uses, as for the relief of poor Catholic children and the like".

John transported both of his wives to MD

John had purchased "Piles Woodland" from John Piles but had not finished paying for it at his death. John Piles tried to reclaim it But James Langworth, having been appointed overseer of James
Greenwell, was able to save the homestead.
