Elizabeth Baset

(1636 - Bet 8 Jan 1706 and 1707)

Elizabeth was widowed in England, where her seven children had been born, and came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with all her children in tow. The name seems to have been rendered Potts after their arrival in the New World. They are believed to have arrived in 1698, on the ship "William Galley," and were among the first settlers of Germantown.

Elizabeth was the widdow of Thomas Potts when she married Edmund Bennett according to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1.asp&clear_form=true

In 1685, Elizabeth was married to Edmund Bennet of Bucks County, PA. There is evidence, both historic and traditional, that the Potts family came to Pennsylvania with William Penn, who was responsible for bringing many of the persecuted Quakers to America. Penn made his first voyage in 1682, but he was preceded by other ships, which he had sent in 1681, and it is believed that Elizabeth Potts and family were passengers on one of these.

-- MERGED NOTE ------------

"Elizabeth Potts and Jane Potts, her daughter, came to Pennsylvania in 1683, as shown by a deed recorded in the Recorder's Office of Philadelphia, in Deed-Book E3, Volumn 6, page 42. They were the first of the name known to have settled in that state. Elizabeth Potts seems to been a widow when she came to Pennsylvania, and it is believed that others of the family, besides her daughter Jane, came with her. They were Friends and in 1685 were under the care of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. In 1684 they obtained a grant of one hundred acres of land, which was supposed to be laid out in Philadelphia County, but a subsiquent resurvey showed it to be in Chester County."
