Subject: [MDSTMARY] John Medley died 19th August 1660 St Marys County: Who was he really?
Tradition has it that the John Medley who came to St. Mary's county in 1635 and died 19 Aug 1660 was born in Elland, Yorkshire 25 Feb 1615 and was the son of Richard Medley and Susana Rhodes, who were my 10th great grandparents, therefore making John my 9th great uncle. I had accepted these details as facts, and added them to my family tree.
However just recently I had a DNA test done and discovered that I can find no Medleys who claim to be descendants of John have DNA that match mine. I immediately thought that this anomaly may have been caused by an infidelity in my family line until a member of the Methley family had his DNA test and it matched mine proving that the Medleys and the Methleys really are the same family, as records would indicate, splitting in the late 1400s, and therefore casting serious doubt on the story that John could possibly belong to the Medley family of Elland. Interestingly, I have a full match with the descendants of a James Medley born in Virginia in the late 1700s and his family seem to think he wasn't descended from John Medley from St Mary's county.
I would like to hear from any Medley family members who have had their DNA done and see if we can work out this conundrum.
Regards;
Steve
