Notes
Death
On the right side of Mr. Scott's tomb there is a second tomb, raised on pillars about two feet from the ground. The top slab of gray stone is unbroken, and the effigies are complete, but the inscription is nearly illegible. Above the inscription there are, in relief, two winged angels, each holding a globe in the one hand, and a palm branch in the other. Under these are the words, "memento mori" with the usual skull and cross bones. Then follows this inscription in sunken letters :"Here lyeth the Body of Sarah, the Wife of the Rev'd Alex'r Scott, A. M., Minister of Overwharton Parish, & Formerly Wife & Widow of Wm. Brent of Richmond, Gent. She exchanged this Life for a Better About the 4lst year of her Age on Monday at one o'clock of Oct'r 291)1, 1733. * * Pro!i, Moritur * * tegiluriiicaSaraSepultala.be * * *"
This inscription was copied from the tomb some years ago by Rev. John Moncure (moncure 121, p. 457), who says that reference was also made on the tomb to Mrs. Scott's children, by her first husband. I visited Dipple grave yard on one of the hottest days of June, 1887, and deciphered enough of the nearly extinct inscription to assure me of the correctness of the first half, as recorded above. It is not known that Mr. Scott had any children.
