Jane Sanders
(Abt 1691 - Bef 17 Nov 1725)
Notes:
Bye the bye, Jane Sanders probably wasn't the mother of Peter Johnson's children or even his wife. First, Jane, wife of Peter Johnson, as the wife of Ethelbert Doyne is mentioned in 1707. Jane Sanders would have been at the most 16 years old at that time, but more likely was about 3 years old.
Peter Johnson names his son Leonard and his daughter "Matthew" in his will. ("Martha" as "Matthew" happens a bunch. Thank God, Peter identified her as a daughter.) He states that his "Children are to be of age at 16 yrs. or marriage of their mother." Given the laws and customs of the day, he had to have known his wife would most likely marry again immediately if not sooner, so I infer that his children were at least 13 years old or older at the time he wrote his will, 3 July 1701 -- i.e. old enough to be "of age" after the immediate marriage of their mother. (Would he have wanted a child 10 years old or younger to be "of age" at the marriage of their mother?) A 13 year old would have been born in 1688, an 18 year old 1683, in the same time frame that Jane Sanders' parents were marrying.
Notice also that Jane (Matthews) Doyne in 1738, does not mention married names for the two daughters of Jane Sanders, Mary and Jane Doyne. Unmarried, so born about 1720 or later. Roger Smith, Mary Doyne's husband was born after 1715.
John Sanders, in the codicil to his will written 6 July 1729, speaks of the three Doyne grand-children left in his care until old enough to receive their estates "as designated". While there is no copy of either Ethelbert's or Jane's will available, the usual would be for the boys to be designated old enough at 18 and the girls at 16 or marriage. Considering that John Sanders described them thusly "3 small children being in his hands", I doubt they were very close to the ages 16 and 18. So born about 1720.
Either there was another Ethelbert Doyne or this Ethelbert Doyne must have had another "Jane" wife before Jane Sanders. Assuming the widow of Peter Johnson married Ethelbert before they administer Peter's estate in 1707, it is very strange for Ethelbert's and (this) Jane's children to still be "3 small children being in his [John Sanders'] hands" in 1729.
