William Tallman was by trade a weaver, though he was also an inn-keeper at Reading, and a farmer as well.
He settled early at Berks County, Pennsylvania, where he bought part of the Lincoln land and others, as well as land in Reading, PA.
Later he joined the migration of his friends, the Boones, Lincolns, and Hentons, moving near the Lincolns in Augusta County, VA, now Rockingham County.
