Charles County Gentry by Harry Wright Newman
The first reference to John Hanson in Charles County was of June 1672, when he witnessed the will of Stephen Montague-though a John Hanson, with no county given, was named as the overseer of the estate of John Pain in 1671. From the former fact, it is concluded that in 1672 John Hanson had attained at least his eighteenth birthday, the required age for witness, consequently his birth occurred prior to the year 1654.
In 1675 he purchased land from Thomas Cosker, and in 1677 he bought additional land from William Lowday and Joan his wife, the latter conveyance being witnessed by Thomas Jenkins and Joseph Wolff. These are practically the only knowledge of land ownership. [These names were read as "Loveday" and "Harmon" by Elise Greenup Jourdan. She was correct on the former and in error on the latter.]
He failed to exercise his rights to 50 acres of land upon his intentions to become a subject. And from the fact that he patented no land may offer the suggestion that he were of the second generation in the Province. Furthermore, if he had been of foreign birth, he would have come under the Act of Naturalization which affected all residing in the Province after a certain year. While record exists of the naturalization of Hans Hanson, none is found for John.

HANSON ANNE dau of John & Mary of Portobacco b 18 Jan 1692
PULLUFFUS, Joseph, age 65, about 40 years ago he was a servant to Mr. John Hanson, father of Col. Robert Hanson, 6 July 1742; CHLR 1741-1743 39:423. Age 68, about 24 years ago he sold part of York to Thomas SANDERS; CHLR 1744-1745 40:394.
John Hanson, grandfather of the Pres., bearing the same name, was transported to MD. as an indentured servant by William Plumley of Barbados and sold in the winter of 1661-1662 to Edward Keene of Calvert County, MD. He was unrelated to Anders (Andrew) Hansson. GEORGE ELY RUSSELL, THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST 63: 211-213 (1988).
A George A. Hanson, published "Old Kent: The Eastern Shore of Maryland", which created the hoax story that the immigrant John Hanson was one of 4 brothers who came to New Sweden in the care of Gov. Printz, and that his father had died in battle of Lutzen, fighting next to Gustavus Adolphus, and that this father had married Swedish royalty (a granddaughter of the Swedish King, Gustavus VASA). Every part of the story was a hoax, which (unfortunatly) was picked up and published by many subsequent writers, none of whom bothered to search for the facts. Dr Peter S. Craig, "THE 1693 CENSUS OF THE SWEDES ON THE DELAWARE RIVER (1993)".
HOAX: "Andrew Hanson and his 3 younger brothers, (Randolph, William, John) orphans, arrived in New Sweden with Gov. Printz and lived with the Gov. on Tinicum Island until 1653 when they moved to Maryland. John Hanson born abot 1630 in Sweden, settled in Charles county, MD. about 1656 as grandfather of John Hanson, first Pres. under the Articles of the Confederation. "George A. Hanson, OLD KENT: THE EASTERN SHORE OF MARYLAND (1876)".
FACT: "Anders Hansson and his brother, Matthias Hansson arrived in New Sweden in 1641". "They were among the freemen protesting Printz's harsh rule in 1653 and thereafter fled.". "Anders made it safely to Maryland; Matthias Haansson, however, died, having apparently been one of the 2 escapees who were overtaken and slain by Indians employed by Gov. Printz's son-in-law, Johan Papegoja." Dr Peter S. Craig, "THE 1693 CENSUS OF THE SWEDES ON THE DELAWARE RIVER (1993)".
