Charles County Gentry by Harry Wright Newman
The first reference to John Hanson in Charles County was of June 1672, when he witnessed the will of Stephen Montague-though a John Hanson, with no county given, was named as the overseer of the estate of John Pain in 1671. From the former fact, it is concluded that in 1672 John Hanson had attained at least his eighteenth birthday, the required age for witness, consequently his birth occurred prior to the year 1654.
In 1675 he purchased land from Thomas Cosker, and in 1677 he bought additional land from William Lowday and Joan his wife, the latter conveyance being witnessed by Thomas Jenkins and Joseph Wolff. These are practically the only knowledge of land ownership. [These names were read as "Loveday" and "Harmon" by Elise Greenup Jourdan. She was correct on the former and in error on the latter.]
He failed to exercise his rights to 50 acres of land upon his intentions to become a subject. And from the fact that he patented no land may offer the suggestion that he were of the second generation in the Province. Furthermore, if he had been of foreign birth, he would have come under the Act of Naturalization which affected all residing in the Province after a certain year. While record exists of the naturalization of Hans Hanson, none is found for John.
