Jonas Hiestand

(25 Dec 1834 - 6 Nov 1902)

Jonas HIESTAND was a minister in the United Brethren Church. Presumably, he was also a farmer. He served during the Civil War in Company C of the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. According to Keith Hiestand YORK, he was drafted from Allen Twp, Darke, OH on 23 Sep 1864 and was mustered out at Nashville, Davidson, TN in June 1865. He received a pensionk, so those records would be useful in learning more about Jonas and his family. He had children from both marriages (Mary HALDERMAN and Lydia FLESHER), but which children belong to which marriage is somewhat confusing.

Sometime after Mary HALDERMAN's death in 1877, he moved to IN, as records supposedly show he married Lydia FLESHER in Jay, IN. Both Jonas and Lydia died in TN. We don't know when they went there.

Curiously, the youngest son, Ezra (mother Lydia), who was born in 1893, is buried at Webster Cemetery in Rossberg, OH. Was the body sent back to OH for burial or was the family living in OH at the time of his death?

Military

Jonas HIESTAND served during the Civil War in Co. C, 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. According to Keith Hiestand York, he was drafted from Allen Twp, Darke, OH on 23 Sep 1864 and was mustered out of the service at Nashville, Davidson, TN in June 1865. He is recorded as receiving a pension.

Marriage

Sometime after Mary HALDERMAN's death in 1877, Jonas moved to Indiana, as records show he married Lydia FLESHER in Jay, IN. Both Jonas and Lydia died in Tennessee. It is not known when they moved there. Curiously, the youngest son, Ezra, born in 1893, is buried at Webster Cemetery in Rossburg, OH.
