Death
Alice F. Ostrander, 97, formerly of Iowa City, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 25, 2009, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Paul Akin officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Sylvania, Ohio. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church, with a reception and luncheon following the services there. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for the streets around the church.) Memorial donations can be made in Alice’s memory to First United Methodist Church, Iowa City Hospice, Iowa City Senior Center or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Alice Fern Conner was born Dec. 12, 1911, in Tiffin, Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Nannie (Furr) Conner. She married Harry R. Ostrander Sr. on Nov. 14, 1930. Harry died in 1968. In 1970, she married Arthur Franz, who died in 1995. Alice’s family includes her five children, John “Jack” Ostrander (Shirley) of Vero Beach, Fla., Nancy Tyner (James) of Clermont, Fla., Darlene Hollister of Las Vegas, Nev., Harry Ostrander (Christine) of Coralville and Rolland Ostrander (Vera) of Solon; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, and grandson, Joel Tyner. We learned much from our mother, but most precious to her was her love of our Lord and the importance of family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.
