Individual Details

Robert Albian SMALLWOOD

(August 22, 1845 - August 16, 1907)

In the Federal census records of 1850 and 1860, Robert is listed as living in Prince William County, Virginia. The Civil War veterans records show that he enlisted in Michigan Brigade in January, 1865. He was discharged in June, but was apparently ill much of the time. The brigade commander was Major General George A. Custer, so it may not have been so bad that he missed combat. Robert was married twice. The marriage certificate for the second marriage lists him as a widower. Therefore, his first wife, Annie, died some time between 1866 and 1879. By 1900, the census records show Robert living in Leesburg, VA. On his death, as a veteran, he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery just outside of Washington, D.C. In the 1910 census (VA), the address is further specified at 1900 King Streeet, Leesburg, VA.
