Mr. Walter Ray Trobaugh Jr., 79, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. A son of the late Walter Ray Trobaugh Sr. and Thelma Furr Trobaugh, he was born on July 23, 1926, in Harrisonburg. He graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1944. Upon graduation, he entered Bridgewater College for a year prior to entering the U.S. Army, spending active duty in Germany during World War II. After the war, he returned to Bridgewater College and transferred to Virginia Tech. Mr. Trobaugh then worked for his dad at Rockingham Construction Co. He later joined Nielsen Construction Co., where he became co-owner and worked for 32 years retiring as President and CEO in 1988. He served on various boards including the former Rockingham National Bank, (now Wachovia) Harrisonburg Electric Commission, Zoning Appeals, and the Planning Commission. He was a former member of the Association of General Contractors, along with Harrisonburg Lion and Rotary Clubs. Mr. Trobaugh was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, and was also a member of Harrisonburg Elks Lodge No. 450 for 58 years and Saints and Sinners. On Aug. 6, 1955, he married the former Joan Lee Holst, formerly of Princeton, N.J., who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Jacqueline Trobaugh Stephens and her husband, John Edward Stephens of Radford, Va.; one son, Walter Ray Trobaugh III and his wife, Debra Taylor Trobaugh of Harrisonburg; and three grandchildren, Mallory Joan Stephens, Taylor Marie Trobaugh and Walter Ray Trobaugh IV. He is also survived by three special nieces, Deborah Dull Walker, Jeri Dull Adams and Toni Dull Snyder. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John F. Sloop officiating. Burial will follow in Woodbine Cemetery. The family will receive friends at his residence from 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call at Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home at any time. The casket will not be open.
