Death
James Preston Wichael, 91, died at 5:25 Tuesday evening, March 25, 2008, at Willow Estates in Penn Laird, where he had been a resident since 1999. A son of the late Stuart Arlie and Lucretia Ruth Furr Wichael, he was born on March 9, 1917, in the Spring Creek community. He had formerly made his home in Harrisonburg, Broadway and Baltimore, Md., prior to moving to Clover Hill, where he lived for 35 years. Mr. Wichael served in the Army during 1945. After serving in the military, he then was a truck driver for 23 years and worked in the dietary department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital for 15 years prior to his retirement. On July 17, 1937, he married the former Helen Manning, who preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 1985. He is survived by two daughters, Deanna W. Hillyard of Harrisonburg and Linda W. Shifflett of Dayton; one sister, Marie Butner of Baltimore, Md.; five grandchildren, Sheri Moak, Kay Wichael, Scott Hillyard, Todd Hillyard and J.R. “Jay” Shifflett; five great-grandchildren, Jossalyn Hillyard, Coale Shifflett, Jacob Hillyard, Jonas Hillyard and Torie Shifflett; two step-great-grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Gerry Wichael of Harrisonburg. He was preceded in death by one son, Donald K. Wichael, on Dec. 11, 1991. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. this (Thursday) evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at two o’clock on Friday afternoon in the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert N. Hoskins Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rockingham Memorial Hospital, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.Endnotes
