Notes
Death
Mrs. Catherine J. Swingle, prominent member of an old District family, died Monday at her home, where she lived with her son, 1301 Newton Street Northeast. She was eighty-three years old. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at her home. Rev. Dr. Luden Clark and Rev. Dr. A.S. Mowbray officiated. Mrs. Swingle was the daughter of Alexander McGonegal, well known contractor here. Her grandfather, Henry Smith, settled here at the time Washington was chosen to be the nation’s capital. He was also a contractor and aided in restoring the White House after it had been burned by the British in 1812. Mrs. Swingle was a member of Hamline Methodist Episcopal Church and was an active worker there. Her husband, Josiah M. Swingle, celebrated with her their sixty-first wedding anniversary last May. Surviving her are her husband and three sons, Ernest B., John W. and Morgan A. Swingle. The Evening Star, September 17, 1920
