Joseph R. McCombs, 89, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 in Miller's Merry Manor, Sullivan. He was a retired chemical operator for Commercial Solvents Corporation. He was born Oct. 3, 1919 in Terre Haute to Joe McCombs and Edna McKee McCombs. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Eileen Furr McCombs, who passed away in 2005.Survivors include a companion, Elizabeth Button of Brownsburg; a daughter, Patricia Keep and her husband, James of Sullivan; a sister, Mary Alice Griffith; eight grandchildren, Julie Hall Dickison and her husband Caral, Matt Hall and his wife Sara, Carrie Bechtel, Michael Bechtel, Roxanne Jones, Rachelle Jones, James S. Keep and his wife Kathryn and Douglas Keep; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Edward, Kristi-Ann, Katelyn, Evan and Ariel; and several nieces and nephews. Joseph was also preceded in death by his parents; three daughters, Diana Bechtel, Linda Kay McCombs and Brenda Jones; and two grandchildren, Jared Jones and Bethany Sue Jones.Joseph was a member of Saint Joseph University Parish, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 972 and was an Army Veteran of World War II where he served with the 38th Division.A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Saint Joseph University Parish with Father Richard Kaley officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery with Military Rites performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 972. Visitation is scheduled prior to services Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Saint Joseph University Parish. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
