David FURR

(Abt, 1850 - )

David Furr of Mount Sidney appears to have been as much of an entrepreneur as he was a thief. In February 1878, Furr started out to conduct what the Valley Virginian called a “regular raid.” He broke into the smokehouse of Samuel Litton near Springhill and stole a quantity of bacon. After that, he went to the house of one of Litton’s neighbors and stole a horse; moving on, he stole a wagon and harness from yet another neighbor. “Thus equipped,” reported the Virginian, “he loaded his wagon and came to town where he sold the bacon to F.M. Markwood, and leaving the horse and wagon at Wehn’s wagon yard, skipped from the town.” However, the authorities failed to appreciate Furr’s entrepreneurial streak. When they caught him at his home some time later, they tossed him in jail and a judge ordered him to receive 15 lashes for theft and housebreaking.
