Jesse Russell writes:

I was helping a man in regard to his Furr family in Virginia recently and was skimming through some family trees that may have had decent documentary proof for his ancestor, who also was Ephraim Furr b. abt. 1822 in Loudoun or Fauquier Co. Va. I can give you the ancestors of Ephraim if you would like. My 2nd ggf was Kemp Baylis Furr b. 1825 in Loudoun Co. Va.

The first thing I should tell you which may help you understand the Furr's and where they lived is how Clarke, Loudou, Fauquier, Frederick Co. and Jefferson Co. all relate to one another.

The Furr family came to Fauquier Co. Va. in the early part of the 1700s from either Stafford Co. or Northumberland Co. Va. For generations they lived near a stretch of road, Rt. 50 today, in about a 15 linear mile that includes Fauquier, Loudoun and Clarke Co. Clarke Co. was formed from Frederick Co Va. in 1836. Loudoun from Fairfax Co. Va in abt. 1760 and Fauquier from Prince Wm. Co. Prior to 1836 Frederick Co. adjoined Fauquier Co. at the top of the Blue Ridge. Travel another approximate 4 -5 miles east and it becomes Loudoun Co. At the top of the mountain where it becomes Fauquier Co., Loudoun Co. is basically only a stones throw to the north of Fauquier. Jefferson Co. WV adjoins Loudoun, Clarke and Frederick Co. today. So, when you see a Furr living in another county, keep in mind that they really weren't very far at all from the other family members.

Anyway, your Ephraim does go back to the first Furr that came here who was Wm. Furr and his wife Charity Bates. Wm. had a son named Ephraim b. abt. 1744 who was a brother of my 4th ggf, Moses Buckner Furr, Sr. Also a brother to Lt. Enoch Furr of the Rev. War. Ephraim had a son, Jesse b. abt 1774. Jesse had a son, Ephraim named for his Jesse's father. This Ephraim b. abt. 1822, inferred from census, had a son named Wm. Holmes Furr b. 1859. Ephraim b. 1822 was born in Loudoun Co. in this stretch of Rt. 50 I mentioned earlier. He lived in the Blue Ridge in the area of Clarke Co. by at least the 1860 census, still just a stones throw from Fauquier and Loudoun. By 1880, he was living in Jefferson Co. Kabletown, WV which is only 2 miles or less from the Clarke Co Va. line. Family trees state that he died in NC. I am all but positive that this is erroneous. There was an Ephraim Furr about this time in NC but it was not our Ephraim. I cannot find a death cert for our Ephraim but it is highly doubtful that at 60 years old he would have left Jefferson Co WV for NC.
