Fenton FURR

(June 26, 1812 - July 16, 1881)

Tombstone reads: "Fenton Furr, b 6/26/1812-d/7/16/1881"

Pat Duncan's Index of 1860 census on p. 81 reads; Fenton FURR: 48 yrs, farmer; Susan E, 42, H Catherine, 19, Virginia, 17, John W. T., 14, AGNUS {SIC]12, Mary G. 9, Sallie 7, Ellen 4. All born Virginia. Also Josephine Waddag in household. In Bellmont or Bloomfield; household # 535, family # 535; p 603:075

Fenton:
*possibly same as one who married Susan E. Gill on 4/5/88, according to Jewell's Marriage Bonds; *"There was a fire at the Furr residence (insured by Loudoun Mutual Insurance Co of Waterford)", per Washingtonian newspaper of Leesburg, 7 December 1878;

* per an article in the Loudoun (Hamilton) Telephone, 2 November 1888: the article reads:"Married in the M.E. Church South at Bloomfield, on Wednesday morning, October 24, 1888 by the Rev. J.C. Dice Mr. Gabriel V. Braden and Miss Sallie Gill Furr, daughter of the late Fenton Furr, all of Loudoun."

Catherine:

I have one Catherine Furr as a free black head of household in Waterford village census of 1840: she a free black female over 55; also in household, 1 free black female aged 10-24.

Duncan's book on the 1860 census gives a Catherine Furr but indicates she is _white_: she is shown as 70 years old, born Virginia, with a girl named Virginia, age 14, in household. also Bloomfield or Bellmont. Family and household 532 so only three doors away from Fenton. page is 602:074.

Then checked slave schedules - both Catherine and her son Fenton owned slaves - and listed for Fenton in 1860 is a 22 yr. old male mulatto (born 1838), who is not listed in 1850. My great grandfather Dennis WILLIAMS was blonde and blue eyed - would have been listed as mulatto - and he was born 1838. Then found Catherine FURR's slave schedule - and she has a 12 female mulatto listed - the correct age for my great-grandmother Mariah Luella PAYNE - who later became second wife of Dennis, after the death of his first wife. I know this is still flimsy - but will now do more digging - and at least have some direction to pursue. Some records indicate my great grandfather as being in Bloomfield - which is another clue. No trace of Mariah's sister Hannah - but oral history says they were split up - and the third sister Annie escaped from "a mean mistress" on the underground railroad.
