Death
CARLSBAD — A memorial Mass for Dr. Allan “Doc” Furr, 79, of Carlsbad, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Edward Catholic Church with Father Sebastian Cunningham officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Dr. Allan “Doc” Furr died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Dr. Allan “Doc” Furr was born Jan. 16, 1925, and raised on a farm near Parkston, S.D. He attended school there and graduated from Parkston High School. In 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served aboard the destroyers USS Bristol and USS Sperry in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and was honored to have received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and one star. In 1950, he married Helen Kurtenbach, and they were blessed with two children. Joyce is an elementary school teacher, and Kurt works as a hospital pharmacist. Allan received his biological science degree and his doctor of veterinary medicine and surgery degree from Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., in 1965. His master’s degree in veterinary toxicology was attained at Iowa State University in Ames in 1973. He was a diplomat for the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology. He was also the author of numerous articles published in veterinary journals. During his tenure as chief staff veterinarian of animal imports, he served in all 50 states and in some foreign countries, including Poland, Germany, England, Mexico, Canada, Kenya, Union of South Africa, Botswana and Japan. Allan was a member of the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, having served in various offices. He sang with the Eleventh Hour Choir at St. Edward Catholic Church and had been serving as the president of the Carlsbad Cemetery Board. He was a renowned sausage maker, an avid reader and a skilled woodworker. Preceding him in death were his parents, Orville L. and Clara Furr, as well as his only sibling, Robert. He leaves to mourn Helen, his wife of 54 years; daughter Joyce Freeman, of Carlsbad; son Kurt Furr, of Pella, Iowa; grandchildren Kyle Anderson and husband Trevor, of Vermont, Amanda Freeman, of Colorado, and Kate and Allan Furr, of Iowa; and one great grandson Sam Freeman. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Third and Fourth Degree Knights, all members of VFW Post No. 3277 and the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard, c/o Bill Festing, 201 E.
