Notes
Death
A 42-year-old man living in his car and working at a Sunrise telemarketing firm was shot dead Friday, minutes after losing his job, police said. David Furr died shortly after 2:30 p.m. at Broward General Medical Center, shot in the chest at work with a weapon of unspecified caliber, police said. Furr’s boss, Joseph Gerard Stiles, 45, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder. Stiles, a company manager who lived in Oakland Park, was booked and held in Broward County Jail without bail, Sunrise police Lt. Terri Spongross said late Friday. Spongross said the two men were having an argument when Stiles pulled out a gun. “[Stiles] pointed it at Furr, pulled back and cocked the hammer; and he says it went off accidentally,” Spongross said. Stiles told police he had just fired Furr at the two-story offices of National Clearing Center, a telemarketing company in Sunrise’s industrial park at 10210 NW 50th St. Other employees were in the building, but only one female worker told police she heard the brief argument. The gun was recovered. Furr, whose last address is unknown, lived in his car at the business for the past three weeks, Spongross said. No other information was available, she said. The homicide is the third handled by Sunrise police this year, all related to the workplace. In early March, two employees died in what was ruled a murder-suicide at a restaurant near Weston, apparently after one of the men was transferred against his will. The Miami Herald, (Miami, Florida, May 2, 1992
