Notes
Death
J. Frank Fry, one of the oldest residents of this community, died suddenly this morning about nine o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mr. R. C. Ogg, 236 Jefferson Highway, just east of the South River bridge. Mr. Fry was 86 years of age. Funeral services will be conducted from the Ogg residence, Wednesday morning at ten-thirty o'clock, with interment to follow in Riverview cemetery. In charge will be Rev. H. Lee Scott, pastor of the Waynesboro Baptist Church, of which Mr. Fry has been a long and faithful member. Pallbearers have not been announced. He is survived by five children: Mrs. R. C. Ogg, John C. Fry, Mrs. D. F. Vines, and Durwood F. Fry, all of this city, and Mrs. Vivian Roberts, of Orange. Seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Since moving to this community in 1890, the first year of the Basic City "boom." Mr. Fry had been active in civic affairs. He served a number of terms as a member of the Basic City town council, and had been an officer of the local Odd Fellows and Junior lodges. Until recent bad health, he had been a regular attendant at the Baptist Church and closely connected with various activities there. In the pioneer days of Basic he was engaged in the livery, wood and coal business, and later in the grocery field, prior to his retirement a number of years ago. He had been in unusually god health for a man of his age, but since an attack of angina several months ago had been more or less confined to the home of his daughter. His sudden death, in bed this morning was the result of another attack. Mr. Fry was born near Staunton, March 5, 1850, the only child of Rev. C. F. and Lucy Fry. He married Miss Althea Engleman, of Staunton, and they spent the early years of their married life in Amherst County, later moving here. Mrs. Fry died Dec. 5, 1931Waynesboro News Virginian, June 29, 1936
