Death

Norfolk - John Happer Furr died peacefully in his sleep early Saturday March 15, 2014. John Happer Furr was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 6, 1924. He was the son of Herman Richard Furr and Rosa Lee Happer Furr. He attended the public schools of Norfolk, graduating from Maury High School in 1943. He then entered the United States Army where he served from 1943-1946. Following World War II, he entered the University of Virginia, where he graduated with a degree of BA in 1949 and that of an MD in 1953. He received postgraduate training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, Bellevue Hospital in New York, NY, The Institute of Living in Hartford, CN and the Willian Alanson White Institute of Psychoanalysis in New York, NY. He returned to Norfolk in 1958 and opened his office for the practice of General Psychiatry. He was on the staff of Norfolk General Hospital where he served as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry from 1967-1970. He was also on the staffs of DePaul Hospital, Leigh Memorial Hospital and the Tidewater Psychiatric Institute. He was a former consultant in Psychiatry at the Veteran's Administration Center in Hampton, VA and the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk. In 1971, Dr. Furr joined six other psychiatrists in founding the Tidewater Psychiatric Institute and Psychiatric Associates of Tidewater, the first large group practice in this area. He was Secretary until 1980. He was President of Psychiatric Associates of Tidewater in 1988. At various times, he was on the Board of Directors of the Norfolk Mental Health Clinic, the C.G. Jung Society of Tidewater and the Norfolk Council on Alcoholism. He was a member of the mental Health Advisory Committee of the Norfolk Area Medical Center Authority and a consultant for the Florence Crittendon Home in Norfolk and to the Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing. He was also Asst. Professor of Psychiatry at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Furr was a member of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Medical Association, the Tidewater Academy of Psychiatry serving as its Secretary from 1965-1967 and its President from 1967-1970. He was a member of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia, serving as its historian for several years. He was a Life Fellow of the Southern Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was also a member and past President of the Seaboard Medical Association. He was a life-long Member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church and served on the vestry of that church for three terms. He also served twice as Senior Warden of Saint Andrews Church. Dr. Furr was formerly a member of the Virginia Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Norfolk German Club. He was a member of the Jamestown Society, the Order of First Families of Virginia, the Society of the Lees of Virginia and the Sons of the American Revlolution. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of For Kids, Inc., and of the Norfolk County Historical Society. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years the former Mary Eugenia McCardell on March 30, 2012. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephew. Namely: Mary Eugenia Furr Daniel and husband William Scott Daniel, John Happer Furr, Jr., William McCardell Furr and wife Margaret Kyle Tabor Furr, Rosa Lee Furr, Adelia Atkinson Furr Gregoire and husband Paul Henri Gregoire, grandchildren: Margaret McCardell Furr, Mary Tabor Furr, John Owen Furr, Mary MacNicol Daniel, William Furr Daniel, John Henri Gregoire, Catherine Adelia Gregoire, Leah Mary Atkinson Gregoire, nieces, Anne Campbell Furr Huffman and husband Stephen and Elizabeth Kendall Furr Johnson and husband Jeffery, and nephew William Thomas McCardell. There will be a family burial at Elmwood Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. and a funeral at 12:30 at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church Tuesday, March 18.
