Death
SPRINGFIELD - L. Edgar Rumrill, 87, formerly of Springfield, died March 5, 2007, at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Frederick, Md. He was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Bellows Falls, the son of Lewis E. and Isabelle (Smith) Rumrill. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1938. Mr. Rumrill served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a member of the Seabees. He was one of the founders of the Alcoholics Anonymous organization in the Washington, D.C., area and worked for more than 50 years as its ambassador, traveling nationwide. Survivors include his companion, Rita Folk of Frederick, Md.; a son, James MacLaurin of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Barrett of Keene, N.H., and Priscilla Bean of Charlestown, N.H.; a granddaughter, a grandson and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor of United Methodist Church in Springfield, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. There are no calling hours.
