Death
James Walter Johns, 89, of Waynesboro, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Avante at Waynesboro, surrounded by his family. He was born in Albemarle County on June 22, 1927, a son of the late Edward William Sr. and Jannie Eudora (Wood) Johns. James was a graduate of the Waynesboro High School Class of 1946. He proudly served in the United States Army. James retired in 1985 from DuPont as a Quality Supervisor. James was an active member of Fishersville Baptist Church, serving as chairman of the building and grounds committee and a member of Y.E.S. Choir. His hobbies included yard working and gardening. James was a devoted family provider. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Marcia (Furr) Johns; stepson, William Mark Shields; as well as two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Betty (McAlister) Shields Johns; sons, Steve Johns and wife, Charlann, David Johns and wife, Rachael and Charles "Chuck" Johns and wife, Khanda; stepsons, Robert Shields and Linda Chapman and Patrick Shields and Dawn Meunier; stepdaughters, Theresa (Shields) Hodge and husband, Dave and Mary (Shields) Tabor and husband, Tony; 16 grandchildren four great-grandchildren; as well as numerous extended family and friends. A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Fishersville Baptist Church, 1518 Jefferson Hwy, Fishersville, with Pastor Steve Lookabaugh officiating. Active pallbearers will be Steve Johns Jr., James David Johns, Ryan Johns, Nick Johns, Zachary Shields, and Lucas Hodge. Honorary pallbearers will be the church ushers. Burial will be private at Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service at the church in the church fellowship hall. There will be no public viewing or visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made in James's memory to Fishersville Baptist Church General Fund. The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to James's church family and to the staff of Avante' for the loving care, thoughts, and prayers for James and his family.
