Death
EASTON - Andrew (Andy) Minor Heiss, of Easton, MD, died Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Talbot Hospice House in Easton, MD. He was 76. Andy was born in Washington, D.C. on June 21, 1942, son of Louis R. Heiss and Martha Furr Heiss, brother of Michael J. Heiss. He grew up in Silver Spring, MD. He summered in Annapolis, MD, where his parents had a home on the Severn River in Sherwood Forest. This is where he developed his love of the water. Andy graduated from Blair High School in 1960 and began his college years studying Fine Arts at the University of Maryland. He transferred to Notre Dame and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Industrial Design. He started his career as a car designer with General Motors in Detroit, Michigan. The remainder of his working years was as an architectural site planner in the Baltimore, MD area for two medical imaging companies, CGR of France and Toshiba Medical Imaging, headquartered in California. He married the love of his life, Joan Thompson Heiss, on April 5, 1980. They lived and worked in Columbia, MD for 22 years before retiring to the Eastern Shore. They bought their dream home on Peachblossom Creek in 2002. Andy loved anything with an engine. His passion has been automobiles since a young child and later in life it became the history of the automobile. He loved classic antique automobiles, particularly the pre-World War II cars. He felt fortunate to have been able to attend three special Concours D'Elegance shows - Hershey (he did annually), Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. His other loves were boating, reading, and golfing. He owned several boats in his lifetime, both sail and power. He enjoyed being on the water in competition or for pleasure. He was a voracious reader and loved going to the library. Golf became a hobby once he and Joan joined the Talbot Country Club in 2002. He became a student of the game because of his desire to improve his play. He read about the facets of the game, watched video lessons, and spent many hours working on his putting or at the short game practice area. He enjoyed playing in the various men's leagues (especially the Wednesday Night League with Lee Newcomb) and the mixed social events with Joan. He was predeceased by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife, Joan; and his cousin, Judith Stapp, of Tucson, AZ. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Talbot Country Club on Friday, September 7 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Talbot County Free Library, 100 W.
