LTC Tommy Lee Atwell, 70, of Danville, Va. died on Monday, May 2, 2016, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in declining health for the past several years. Tommy was born in Groseclose, Va. on May 10, 1945, son of the late Sidney T. Atwell and Olivene Gillespie Atwell, who survives. He was a proud American Veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a LTC. He later retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was a member of the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 and he was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Marilou Hardy Atwell of the residence; son, Shaun Atwell of Norman, Okla.; daughters, Jennifer Martin and husband, Dwayne of Danville, Va., and Amanda Furr and husband, Michael of Dry Fork, Va.; brothers, Ronnie Atwell and wife, Marty, and Jeff Atwell and wife, Judy all of Rural Retreat, Va.; and grandchildren, Dakota Furr, DesireŠ Carothers, Kalie Carothers, Zandra Martin, Emily Furr, Leah Martin, Lilly Furr, and Chloe Furr. Tommy was a beloved and kind husband, father, and papa who loved his family and found humor in everyday life. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 4:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Mr. George Williams officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097. Interment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the American Legion Dan River Post 1097. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is respectfully serving the Atwell family.Endnotes
