HAYES/ORDINARY - Jean Ruth Eubank Thompson, known as "Ms Ruth" or "Sam" by family and friends, was called home by Jesus Friday, November 17, 2017. Mrs. Thompson was born April 15, 1926 in Webster Springs, West Virginia. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Junius Gardner Thompson (Tommy), son Jason Gardner Thompson and daughters Robin Sue McKinney and Sandra K Moreland. Also preceding her in death were her parents William Garfield and Mina Gay Rhodes Eubank. Ms Ruth was the youngest of nine siblings, who also preceded her in death. Ms Ruth loved her family and friends unconditionally. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lynne and husband Larry Furr of Hayes, granddaughter Barbra Furr of Hayes; also grandchildren Alexander G Thompson (Alec) of Cobbs Creek and Lilly J Thompson of Mathews. Also surviving Ms Ruth are grandchildren Shawn Moreland and Christopher Moreland and great-grandchildren Gregory Moreland and Tiffany Moreland of South Carolina. Ms Ruth also leaves many nieces and nephews to include Jean Dow of Lagrange, Indiana to cherish her memory. Ms Ruth graduated from Webster Springs High School, West Virginia, received several degrees and recognition of appreciation from business and art schools. Ms Ruth loved to travel, read, sew and embroidery. She received several awards for her writing of poems and children's stories. Many of these were published. She played harmonica, accordion, banjo and several other instruments. Ms Ruth retired from The American National Red Cross in 1988 with her service mainly at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. Ms Ruth was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Ordinary, Virginia. She was usually one of the first to assist when there was a need in the community. She always had a kind word and smile for anyone with whom she came in contact. The family expresses sincere thanks to Dr. Peter J Zullo and Hillarey Tulip of Gloucester Internal Medicine and staff of Riverside Walter Reed Hospice to include Christy West, RN for their commitment of care and loving kindnesses shown. A celebration in Mrs. Thompson's memory will be private. The family requests remembrances of Ms Ruth in the form of love gifts be given to Abingdon Volunteer Fire & Rescue, P. O. Box 9, Bena, Virginia 23018. Arrangements are under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home and Crematory, Gloucester Point.Published in Daily Press on Nov. 19, 2017
