Notes
Death
Richard "Ric" Eugene Smith II, 72, of Leesburg, Virginia passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024, due to complications from Alzheimer's. Born in Evansville, Indiana on January 1, 1952, he attended William Henry Harrison High School where he took part in chorus, madrigals and musical theatre. He was especially proud of performing in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". During high school he worked at Tommy Wathen's service station, which allowed him to fuel his passion for cars. After high school he attended Purdue University for one year, then moved to Colorado and settled in Maryland. He was very proud to serve as a US Capitol Police officer and in the office of the US Sargent at Arms. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Computer Science. Using his degree, he worked as a computer programmer at various places including Giant Food, Landmark Systems and ASG. Ric loved telling stories, especially where he could weave in and out of multiple stories and end all of them seamlessly. He enjoyed meeting new people and made friends everywhere he went. He also loved cars and owned more than we can count, including a black 35th anniversary Ford Mustang (1999) and a red 4th generation Chevrolet Corvette (1989), his pride and joy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years Janice Smith (Furr). His daughter, Rhiannon Smith Crownover (Eric) and grandchildren, Maren and Dylan. Sister Julie Bye-Clapp (Chris) and niece Kinsey Bye-Clapp. Sisters Mary Kay Stoermer (Brad) and Karen Clark (Mike). Brother-in-law, Joe Furr. He was a loving husband, father and grandpa. We will always remember him for his endless stories, his strength, his laughter, his love of family (especially his dogs), and how he embraced everyone he met. Our hearts are broken, but our memories will help sustain us.Endnotes
