Knick Lineage17601. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. John / 4. Harmen / 5. John (this person)
Knick Generation Number17605
Birth15 Sep 1760Born 1760, per Salisbury records. (Often mis-quoted as 1766.) Less clear where he was born. 1850 census says b CT, but '55=Mass. In '80, dau Lucy said he was b. Mass. (Father Harmon not on tax list in Salisbury in 1760's.) - Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, USA
Extra information7 May 1785Stephen Pangborn and wife Thankful "of Salisbury" sell land once owned by her mother, Hendrica Hogoboom. Also, in May, a probate file mentions that Thankful Pangborn inherited land at the death of her mother, Mrs Hogoboom. (See her entries.) - Canaan, Litchfield, Connecticut, USA
Extra information5 Jun 1785Grandfather John re-writes his will. "Harmon's John, so-called, my grandson" gets land. Barth & the twins essentially disowned. (Seems harsh, but Thankful had just cashed in her inheritance, and soon moved to VT with S Pangborn, plus Barth and the twi - Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, USA
Marriage9 Jun 1785Four days after grandfather's will was re-written, John Kernickkerbackker Jr of Salisbury married Lydia Jackson of Sharon. "Kernickkerbakker" is unusual ... but remember the tombstone of his grandfather, who apparently went by "Kernickerbacker". - Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut - Lydia JACKSON
Residence17903 John Knicks in Litchfield in '90. (pg 7 & 2 on pg 29). Two show 2 sons/1 dau, fitting birth dates of Harmon+Laura+Peter. No way to differentiate between these two. (The third John, already with 2 daus, wound up with many girls. See Lawrence's John. - Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, United States
Extra information1795An old Sharon CT record says Lovina Pardee married John Kernickerbacker. Wrong. Groom's full name was actually John Knickerbocker Beardslee. Well documented. See John Beardslee in this tree.
Residence4 May 1799John Knickerbacker of Sharon sells a quitclaim, giving up his rights to a parcel formerly owned by John Knickerbocker of Salisbury, deceased, which right was equally divided among the heirs of the deceased man. - Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA
Residence1800Two John Knickerbockers in Litchfield Co in 1800. (The 3rd John from 1790 had disappeared.) The one with 5 sons was in Sharon CT. (The other John has many daughters; he was the son of Lawrence. ) - Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut
Extra information1802The first Knickerbockers in the Eaton area were not John and Lydia. Cousin Jeremiah was in "Hamilton, Chenango Co" in 1802. (Madison Co was formed in 1806; Eaton split from Hamilton in 1807.) - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
Extra informationOct 1804The original deed for John Knickerbocker. The purchase was made when this was Hamilton, Chenango County. It was recorded after Eaton and Madison County were created. - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
ResidenceAug 1810Census entry for John again shows 5 sons, but only 1 daughter. (Laura has married G Peckham.) Note: Ancestry claims that John is in Lebanon, the adjacent town. Wrong. He is in Eaton. Look at the filmstrip. - Eaton, Madison, New York, United States
Extra informationSep 1810No single record names John's 5 sons. However, combination of census & real estate records show the sequence with which they left home. 4 sons captured by census living near John, before they moved farther away. 5th son, Harley, moved back to Eaton la
PropertySep 1810John Knickerbocker sells land in Eaton to Peter Knickerbocker and Harmon Knickerbocker. All three are of Eaton, Madison County, NY. (Book F, pg 125. A copy of the deed is attached to Peter's page.) Note that the sale was after the 1810 census. - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
PropertyNov 1810John makes a 2nd purchase of land. Appears to be 50 acres. Madison County book K, pg. 447. The deed says the sale was done in 1810. However, deed wasn't recorded until Sept 1815. (Recorded same day as a sale from John to Harmon.) - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
Property5 Sep 1815John Knickerbocker and his wife Lydia sell property to Harmon Knickerbocker. All parties are "of Eaton". (Book K, page 448.) Appears John bought 50 acres (previous transaction) then sold 15 of those acres to Harmon. - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
Property1817Harmon sells some of his land to Henry Knickerbocker "of Eaton." (See Henry.) - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
Residence1820Census shows that John only has one son (Hiram) living with him. This is because Harmon, Henry, and Peter are living on their own properties, nearby. Also, Harley has moved to Potter PA; see his census entries. 1 daughter (Lucy) also still home. - Eaton, Madison, New York, United States
PropertyJan 1829John Knickerbocker sells property to Hiram Knickerbocker. (Madison County records, Book AC, Page 385.) Thus not surprising that Hiram is a head of household in the following census. - Eaton, Madison County, New York, USA
Residence1830No children were with John (60-69) and Lydia (70-79). Hiram makes 1st census appearance near John and Harry. Lucy has married Albert Howard. (Also: Bartholomew's sons Stephen and John were heads of households in Eaton in 1830.) - Eaton, Madison, New York, USA
Residence1840John is probably the elderly man living with H. Knickerbocker. (H is Harley; other brothers have names spelled out in their census entries.) The elderly man cannot be Harley's father in law, who died much earlier. Lydia Knickerbocker is gone. - Madison, New York, United States
Knick Census Project: 18501850NY, Oswego, Volney. HOH = Albert Howard.
Residence1850John is living with his daughter, Lucy Howard. He says he was born in CT. (Interestingly, Lucy said "Massachusetts" in answer to the 1880 census question "where was dad born".) - Volney, Oswego, New York
Residence1855John is a boarder. (Landlord: Daniel Sperry, proprietor of the Cincinnatus Hotel, which also had apartments. This is now called the Bennett Hotel.) Son Harry was still living on the farm about a mile away. John's birth listed as Massachusetts. - Cincinnatus, Cortland, New York, USA
Death23 Jan 1860His tombstone in Cincinnatus (now degraded) reportedly said "in his 100th year". One brief obituary says he was 97. - Cincinnatus, Cortland, New York, USA
Extra information18941894 book, long after John died. 2 different stories. #1 OK; says John b in CT. #2 appears to confuse John & his grandfather. (The grandfather John is the one who moved to CT with uncle. The elder John & his uncle Corn founded CT Knick lines.)
Extra information1894The Madison County history mentions an un-named uncle. Years later, an adopted g-g-grandaughter of John's claimed the uncle was "Henry." This has propagated, but has no basis.
BurialCincinnatus, Cortland County, New York, USA
