Harold (Hal) Terkel (Schwam)

Harold 'Hal' Terkel, a veteran broadcast journalist and producer of the CBS Radio 'World News Roundup' since 1965, died Friday night of cancer at his Long Island home. He was 64.
Terkel's career as a newsman began in the late 1930s at radio station KQV in Pittsburgh.
Before serving in the tank corps in World War II, he worked at WKPA in New Kensington, Pa.
After the war, Terkel worked for WLIB in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, WHLI in Hempstead, N.Y., and the Voice of America in New York before joining CBS as a writer, editor and producer in 1955.
In 1965, he became producer of 'World News Roundup,' a 15-minute morning broadcast with Dallas Townsend. The news program won a Peabody Award in 1980.
Terkel also was active in the Writers Guild of America.
Van Gordon Sauter, president of CBS News, said of Terkel, 'In broadcast journalism and at CBS News he was the professional's professional. His friendship was valued by everyone who knew him and worked with him. He will be missed by all of us at CBS.'
Emerson Stone, vice president of CBS-News radio division, said, 'Hal was the kind of person everyone looked to and was so valuable to our organization. He was personally and professionally the best there is.'
