About The Samara Jan Turkel Foundation and Clinical Center
The foundation was established in January 1995 in memory of Scott and Sherry Turkel's daughter, Samara, after they unexpectedly lost her to an unknown, undiagnosed, autoimmune disease. As a disease category, autoimmune disease is the third most prevalent cause of disease in our country following cancer and heart disease. Autoimmune disease cannot yet be "cured," but early diagnosis and treatment can often prevent debilitation and even death. The lack of information and misinformation about these disorders make early recognition and treatment difficult.
The Samara Jan Turkel Clinical Center was established in 2002 as the first of its kind in the country, through the generosity of the Samara Jan Turkel Foundation. The Clinical Center (the premier pediatric healthcare and research facility in the country) offers the first clinical center dedicated solely to the needs of children with autoimmune conditions. Here you will find a multidisciplinary team of physician-scientists and caregivers armed with the most advanced knowledge and experience, the latest treatment options, and the best understanding of the ordeal facing you, your child and your family.
