Death
Obituary Janice Lee (Ward) Turkel (1962-2011)Janice Lee Ward Turkel entered the gates of heaven April 8 after a valiant and courageous fight with metastatic inflammatory breast cancer. She was born Nov. 23, 1962 in Los Angeles, Calif., to parents Kenneth and Mary Ward. She spent most of her early life in California before moving to Utah and eventually to Alaska in 1990. After moving to Anchorage, she settled in the Interior she so proudly loved in 1990.
In October 1997, she married Jeff Turkel, an Air Force firefighter stationed at Eielson Air Force. As a brand new Air Force wife, her introduction to the rigors of being a military wife occurred three weeks after their wedding when Jeff was deployed for 6 months to support the Bosnia peace keeping mission.
In 1997, when Jeff retired from the service, they moved to North Pole and joined the staff of KJNP Radio/TV. In recent years, Janice also worked as a contract mail carrier in North Pole.
Janice was proud of the titles of wife to Jeff, mother to Anna, nana to grandson Kaiden and daughter to Ken and Mary.
Janice is survived by her husband of 14 years, Jeff Turkel of North Pole; daughter, Anna; son-in-law, Cody Cannon; grandson, Kaiden of Fort Sill, Okla.; and very special friends, Lynda Rogers of Waterloo, Ala., Toni Colasacco of Fairbanks, and Cindy Mace of North Pole.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Eve Rodler and staff at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Dr Jeannie Anderson and staff at Katmai Oncology in Anchorage, Dr Hoyt, Dr Marzo, Dr Goldberg and Dr Carter of Bassett Army Community Hospital on Fort Wainwright, as well as the incredible staff at Bassett's' second floor medical surgical unit who helped make Janice's final days on earth a joy to behold. We will forever hold you dear to our hearts for the love, compassion and care you showed us.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 11, at First Baptist Church of North Pole. A celebration of her life will follow from 4:30-6:30 at Fairbanks First Assembly of God Church 2830 Airport Way. Burial in Northern Lights Cemetery will be after breakup.
In lieu of flowers, Janice requested donations be made to the Fairbanks Breast Cancer Detection Center. Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
