Robert Allen Carpenter Sr.

Mr. Robert Allen Carpenter, Sr., 69, of Hamburg died Sunday, March 8, 1999, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. A native of Crossett and life-long resident of Hamburg, he graduated from Hamburg High School in 1947. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arkansas State Teachers College in 1951 and a master's of arts and drama degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley in 1953. He served his county for two years during the Korean Police Action, discharged as a noncommissioned officer, and served in the Arkansas Army National Guard. In recent months, he was involved in establishing a new war memorial in front of the Ashley County Courthouse in Hamburg. He was noted for his water colors, oils and pen-and-ink drawings and painted baptistry scenes for many area churches. With his wife, Imie, he was co-director of the national bicentennial and state sesquicentennial celebrations in Ashley County. They also directed the Miss Ashley County Pageant and were instrumental in earning an affiliation with the Miss Arkansas Pageant system. Together, they wrote The History of First Baptist Church and compiled and published the Reflections of Ashley County history book. The Carpenters traveled extensively across the United States and abroad. He was in business for himself as owner and operator of the Sunset Drive-In Theater and roller rink for many years. He served as president of the Arkansas Theater Owners Association and as a member of the executive board of the National Association of Theater Owners. He served as a member and chairman of the Ashley County Library Board and was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Hamburg and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9360. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Francis and Lydia Linder Carpenter, and a brother, Charles Francis Carpenter, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary Imogene "Imie" Carpenter; a son, Robert A. "Rob" Carpenter, Jr., and wife Julie; a brother, Jackson Henry Carpenter; two granddaughters, Lauren and Mary Ashley Carpenter, all of Hamburg, and many other friends and relatives. Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, in the First Baptist Church of Hamburg with Dr. Bobby Pennington and Rev. Klois Hargis officiating. Pallbearers were to be Bill Lessor, Carl John Bierbaum, J. Lee Posey, Tyman Allison, Scott McCormick, Ricky Rausch, James M. Barker, Trezy Watson, Ray Yarbrough, Edward White, Claude Riley, Jr., Boyce Harrod, Jim Atkins and Clarence Kelley. Honorary pallbearers were to be members of the First Baptist Church's adult men's Sunday School class and members of VFW Post 9360.
Burial with military honors was planned at the Hamburg Cemetery with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P. O.
