Alexandra "Xie" Kitchin was the daughter of the well known cleric and academic, the Rev. George William Kitchin, Dean of Winchester and Durham. She gained immortality as the friend and photographic model of the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). She was photographed by Dodgson scores of times over a period of several years, often in costume. One of these portraits was later turned into a painting by Alice Emily Donkin which hung for years over the mantle in Dodgson's Oxford rooms. As an adult she married Arthur Cardew but always remembered her old bachelor friend with regular correspondence. Alexandra was named for her godmother Alexandra, Princess of Wales, later queen consort to Edward VII.
