Story
From Antoinette Nordan, November 30, 2021 email to Lou Pouletsos and me:Lou you got the connection. Aunt Mae is my father’s sister. As children we came to New Jersey a few times and I met many cousins. Unfortunately, we never kept up the tradition. Mike Monroe and the Atlanta cousins would visit every summer.
John, Felothea’s brother was friends with Mike Spanos, my paternal grandfather. Felothea came to the US and married Mike in Connersville. Then the 4 of them moved to Oklahoma. It was Indian territory. After some number of years, Mike moved to Florida, John moved to NJ.
Later, after graduating from high school in Orlando, my dad, Jimmie moved in with Aunt Mae and Uncle Jim Hazapis. Mike Spanos had died unexpectedly that summer. Jimmie worked at an aeronautics factory when he went into military service. He was stationed in England.
After WWII ended, Jimmie visited his sister Aunt Mary Spanos who married Sam Monroe and was living in Atlanta. Sam’s mother was a friend of my maternal grandmother (patrioti from Constantinople); they thought Jimmie should meet Smaragdi Hagefstratiou (my mom) who lived in BIrmingham. It was love at first sight. They married within months (maybe as much as 4?) and I am the third of three children.
So, at a time of year when you think so much about family, it’s a great pleasure to connect with y’all. My heart almost bursts when I think of what Felothea did. Traveling to the US. Giving birth to 7 healthy children (i was told she and her sister-in-law delivered each other’s babies when they lived in OK). Then Aunt Mae—taking my dad in so he could get a good job after graduating.
