Nicholas Spiros Morekas , 74, co-founded supply firm
Nicholas Spiros Morekas , who co-founded a Baltimore janitorial supply company, died Friday of cancer at home in Towson. He was 74.
In 1953, Mr. Morekas and his brother John established Ariston Paper and Janitor Supply Co. In 1988, the company merged with Atlas Supply Co. of Baltimore, and he continued to work there until he retired in 1990.
Mr. Morekas was born in Baltimore. In 1933, his family moved to Kalamata, Greece. The family remained in Greece during World War II and returned to Baltimore in 1946.
Mr. Morekas went to work at his uncle's shoe factory in Manchester, N.H., for several years.
An avid football and soccer player in high school, he played in a sandlot soccer league in Baltimore for a number of years.
In 1950, he was drafted into the Army and served in an armored division. He was discharged in 1953 with the rank of sergeant.
In 1955, he married Helen Karangelen, who survives him.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, Maryland Avenue and Preston Street.
He also is survived by a daughter, Georgeann Morekas of Baltimore; and brothers Sam Morekas and John Morekas , both of Baltimore.
