Description: In 1856, the Metropolis of Sparta & Monemvasia needed a register of families residing in the village of Mystras. A priest took up the project and ran what we could call a ‘parish census’. 73 households were counted in Mystras and the parish census includes not only the name of the head of the family, but also that of his wife. The census also counts the number of children, male and female, of the family, while in those cases that the family’s head was dead, his widow took his place in the census. Written by Gregory Kontos.
