Several members of the Karayioules (Karangelen) family from Ayios Ioannis and Sklavohori immigrated to Newport News, VA, Norfolk, VA and Baltimore, MD in 1900-1910. They later brought other family members to those locations. For example, my papou, George Dimitrios Karayioules (Karangelen) left Ayios Ioannis at the age of 13 with his 11 year old brother Ioannis and his father, Dimitrios Georgios Karayioules in 1908 for Newport News, VA.
Once his sons were established, great-grandfather Dimitrios returned to Greece leaving his sons to work. The brothers eventually moved to Baltimore where they had Karangelen fanily. George worked a pushcart selling candy and then dressed confectionary story windows owned by the Konstant Brothers (of Paleo Panayia). He and my yiayia, Georgia Demas Karangelen, born in Amykles in 1905 opened a restaurant "George's Lunch" at 1116 Light Street in Baltimore in 1922. The business was sold in 1984. Unfortunately, his brother Ioannis contracted TB and returned to Greece.
Later his sister Konstantina (Dina) and husband, Leonidas Psimoyenis, from Parori, immigrated to Baltimore. Their daughter, Dimitra, later married Ernest Gretes and moved to Norfolk, VA. My grandparents welcomed many family members and patrioti to the USA and hosted them in their home, helping them to find employment either at George's Lunch or other businesses until they were established and able to move on to their own homes. They were very active in the Evangelismos (Annunciation) church life, where they founded the Lykourgos-Taygete social group - still active in 2022. Papou served on the Parish Council and served as President in the 1940s and in the Pan-Laconian society and my grandmother was very active in the Philoptochos. Papou passed in 1956 and yiayia in 2000.
