Dimitrios Pouletsos
(Bef 1781 - )
From Nicholas Pouletsos Personal History, as told to Carol Petranek, August 1989
Our family name, Pouletsos, has a very interesting origin which I was able to trace back to around 1825. The first "Pouletsos" was my great-great-grandfather, Demetrios, who originally came from the island of Spetsis, Greece, in the Aegean Sea. When he was a young kid, he was captured by Algerian pirates and forced to be a galley slave. When the Algerians were defeated by the English in at the Battle of Tripoli, he was set free at the southern part of Greece in an area called "Githion." He then started to travel north. His idea was to go opposite where his island was, then go across back to his island. He came up as far as Peleta where he changed his name to Pouletsos, which I understand means "free as a bird" ("pouli" in Greek means bird). He remained in Peleta, got married and raised his children there. My father was his great-grandchild.
From Anoitnette Spanos Nordan, December 2021: Dimitrios Pouletsos was born Dimitrios Skidas (or Skedes or Skidos) on Spezia (or Spetsos) off the coast of Leonidion, about 1800. He was a sailor who was kidnapped by Algerians and enslaved, around 1810. Lord Exmouth freed those in Algiers, c. 1816. Dimetrios went home but inland to Poulethra and Pelata and changed his name to Pouletsos. This came from Anna and Spiro to my Aunt Mary Spanos Monroe, to my cousin Michael, to me.
