Individual Details
Peter Nikolaos Demakos
(20 May 1895 - Aug 1976)
According to Nick Pappas and Catherine Pappas Kostakos, he never married.
He owned a restaurant off Broadway on 43rd Street. The New York Daily News had an article about his generosity to the poor; he was noted for giving food away to vagrants. Catherine and Bertha Pouletsos said that he was a very generous man and was noted for his generosity.
Catherine and her friend, Tessie Grandin, would go to this restaurant often. Peter took them to the Astor Hotel and the Rainbow Room and other nice restaurants in New York, and they always had an enjoyable time together.
He visited Catherine & Bertha Pouletsos in Hoboken, NJ and also when they lived in Hillsdale, NJ.
According to Nicholas J. Pappas, Pete was a chef. He was business partners withTony Castoras, John Salatas, Andrew Zaganis, and Gus Kolocotta, and Uncle Nick Pappas. He and Uncle Nick were partners in a restaurant at West 44 Street in Manhattan.
According to Nicholas J. Pappas, Pete retired to Greece and died there. His home town was near Sparta (not St. Johns).
August 31, 2022 - Carol Kostakos Petranek spoke with John Kourkoutis -- he verified that Pete came to the U.S., worked in the restaurant business, returned to Greece and died "in Sparta." John said the Demakos' came from Agia Varvara.
