Middletown JournalSign is all that’s left of sweet success
Saturday, October 9, 2010
MIDDLETOWN — One dip of Middletown history has been saved.
When the Revelos building at the corner of Grimes Street and Central Avenue — former site of the Elite Confectionery Co. — was
recently demolished to make way for a gas station, a Revelos sign above the two-story, brick building was saved from the bulldozer.
The sheet metal sign, which measured 18 inches by 8 feet, isin the possession of George N. Revelos.
When asked the importance of salvaging the sign, Revelos,80, of Middletown, said: “It’s the family name.”
Ironically, more than 100 years ago — when James Reveloscame to America from Greece — his last name was changed from Rempelos
to Revelos when he was processed at Ellis Island in NewYork.
Several weeks ago, George Revelos, the oldest of the fiveRevelos children, contacted Realtor Jacqueline Hunter, who obtained
permission from Disposal Solutions Manager Tim Hackney tosave the sign.
Revelos said the sign probably will be given to one of hisnephews, Nick, who plans to hang it in his Columbus garage.
The buildings housed great historical significance inMiddletown and represented its rich Greek ancestry.
“Man,” Revelos said looking over the empty lot, “I’ve spentmany a year in that building.”
His entire family did. The Revelos brothers are connected todesserts like Dave Thomas is to hamburgers. And both were served in
singles, doubles and triples.
It all started when four Revelos brothers immigrated toAmerica after hearing, through letters from relatives, that if they workedhard,
they could be successful in the United States.
James, Nicholas and Charles arrived in the states by 1909,and John in 1912. They learned the candy and ice cream trade from relatives
in Lima, Ohio, and a few years later, moved to Xenia andopened the Candy Kitchen. Elite Confectionery was opened in Middletown
in 1909 next to the Gordon Theater, and then the businesswas moved across the street next to the Castell Building.
By 1920, the brothers had purchased three properties — 1802,1804 and 1806 Central Ave., and they built a candy- and ice creammaking
facility on the property. The retail store was on the firstfloor, candy-making on the second floor and ice cream-making in the
basement.
George Revelos said when he returned from the Korean War,there was a “falling out” among him and his cousins. He split off and
opened the Revelos Confectionery on University Boulevard.
All the dessert businesses have closed, and now thebuildings — once the center of sweetness — have been demolished.
