News Pub (ind)7 Apr 1913THE LATE WM. GREGORY. The death of William Gregory took place on Monday morning, 21st March. in the Lismore, Hospital. About three years ago he had a stroke, which made him a sufferer. He underwent a series of operations, but his end came sooner than was expected. Mr. Gregory was born at Westcott, Surrey, 73 yours ago. He came to Australia in 1844, and lived on the South Coast. Forty years ago he went to live at Kangaloon, and 14 years after came to the Richmond River and took up his abode at Cowlong, where, with his family, he carried on dairy farming till about three years ago. Then he had to give up on account of ill-health. He was married to Sarah Pearson 32 years ago, and reared 12 children, two of whom predeceased their father. Two sons live at Bowral and one at Numulgi (Richmond River). Two daughters, Mrs Richings and Mrs. Wright, live in Queensland, Mrs. Gabb in Sydney, Mrs. F. A. Johnson at Nashua, Mrs. G. Dawes at Eltham, and two still remain at home. Mr Gregory identified himself with the Methodist Church. In his early days he was a Sunday school teacher and a local preacher, and filled the latter position up to nearly the last. For two years he was president of the Cowlong Band of Hope. He was a man of even temperament, with a bright, smiling countenance, and a kind word for everyone who came in contact with him. This made him many friends, and those who knew him best loved him most. His life was an example to all, and the Church and community have suffered a great loss in his demise. The deepest sympathy is extended to his bereaved family. The interment took place in the Bexhlll Cemetery on Tuesday last, there being a large number of friends and relatives at the graveside. The Rev. T. A. Parker conducted tho burial servlce, and the Hon. J. H. Somerville delivered an address dealing with the Christian and spiritual life of Mr. Gregory. He made a special appeal to those around also to be ready, and then when their turn came to leave this world all would be well. The funeral arrangements, in the hands of Mr. Riley; were well carried out
