Joseph William MYERS
(Feb 1826 - Abt 1910)
Copy of obituary and funeral notices from Anna Salierno have no notation of the newspaper in which they appeared. A handwritten note at the bottom says "1910". They say:
"Joseph Myers Taken by Stroke of Paralysis. From Monday's Daily.Joseph Myers, whose home was on the Adobe ranch, died yesterday from paralysis.
Mr. Myers was a native of Illinois, aged 74 years, and came to California in 1852. About five years ago he came to Madera.
Notwithstanding his advanced age he enjoyed very good health until five weeks ago, when he suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never recovered.
He leaves twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, to mourn his death. The sons are, John, Ed., George, Charles, James, Albert and Stephen. The daughters are Mrs. J. B. Jordan, Mrs. John Morter, Mrs. Charles Sawyer, Mrs. S. Ray and Miss Chloe Myers.
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the Methodist church, South.
Interment in Arbor Vitae cemetery."
"Funeral of Joseph Myers". From Tuesday's Daily. The funeral of Joseph Myers was held from the Centenary Methodist church this morning, the services being conducted by Rev. R. L. Sprinkle.
After the services the remains were taken to Arbor Vitae cemetery for interment.
The pall bearers were: A. J. Etter, W. A. Moore, S. E. Payne, Jas. Ragan, J. M. Hollister and C. H. Lillie." A note by Anna says that Arbor Vitae is in Madera.
There is a lot of variation in his estimated age. The obituary says 74 (1836); 1880 census said he was 60 (1820). A FGS from Anna based on Fred Myers info has birth date as 14 Feb 1836, married 1866. Has middle initial for Stephen and middle name for Ellener and Joseph Edward and birth date for Stephen and Ellener (twins).
