"Uncle Bancroft is a curious old philosopher. I was amazingly pleased with him. Somehow, with the exception of Uncle Austin [Birchard], who is the first in my regard, our Yankee relatives by marriage are nearer kin than our blood relatives...
Uncle Bancroft and the whole family were in high spirits and our visit was as happy a one as any we had made..."
RBH (at age 25) to his sister, Fanny Hayes Platt, Aug. 8, 1847.
