Bordered by the Susquehanna River in southeastern Pennsylvania, Lancaster County was created in 1729 from neighboring Chester County.

Email from Linda Paxton 4/22/2000:
John Quickel's father, Michael Quickel came to America from Germany and landed in Philadelphia on July 25, 1736. Michael settled in the Conestoga Valley in Lancaster County. He remained there until 1763, at which time he purchased 200 acres of land in what is now Conewago Township, just east of Dover. In 1770, Michael Quickel gave more than 2 acres to the Lutheran Reformed church which sat at the southwest corner of his original 200 acres. This church became known as Quickel's Church. A well-respected man in the community, Michael helped teach the local children at Quickel's church. In 1776, as a Captain, Michael led a group of volunteer soldiers to Philadelphia.

John Quickel's son, was born in 1762 and baptized at Strayer's Church on July 27, 1763. Michael Quickel willed to his son the 200 acres of land which he owned. John did not accept the conditions of his father's will and purchased 75 acres to the east of his father's land in 1787. John was probably an educated man, though I've found no record of his education.

In the cemetery that sits across the road from Quickel's Church are many stones matching the john Quickel stones found at Strayer's church.

Notes provided by Laura Morrison:
Henry Quickel lived in the stone house built by his parents, Johannes Quickel and Elizabeth Brenneman, in 1824 in Manchester Township. the house is located in the southwestern corner of what is now (1943) East Manchester Twp--now owned by Mr. Evan Glatfelter.
