Obituary
Holbert Howard "Hank" Hendrix, 92, of Las Vegas, passed away Aug. 2, 2007. He was born Nov. 23, 1914, near French Lick, Ind., and had resided in Nevada for 51 years.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Hank began teaching in 1936. He completed his bachelors degree from Indiana University in 1943. With the help of the GI Bill, he received his masters from IU in 1948, and his Ph.D. from the State University of Iowa in 1952.
Before coming to Las Vegas, he was Associate Professor of Education at Ohio University, where he developed a new program for student teaching in public schools. This program was adopted throughout the country. Hank moved his family to Las Vegas in 1956 to help establish the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
He was the first full-time professor in Education. Hank was instrumental in developing the Head Start Program in Las Vegas. After his retirement in 1980, Professor Hendrix was honored by the UNLV Board of Regents with the naming of the education auditorium, The Holbert H. Hendrix Auditorium.
Hank was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, LaVaun Joy Rigg Hendrix. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Clarke of Las Vegas. Memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Contributions can be made to the UNLV College of Education.
