William Dyer

OCCUPATION: Apprentice fishmonger in 1623 or 1624 to Walter Blackborne
CHURCH: December 1635 joined First Church, Boston
1650-53: Rhode Island Attorney General
SERVICE: Signed the compact establishing Rhode Island 7 Mar 1638. Commissioned commander-in-chief upon the sea in 1653 to operate as a privateer against the Dutch.
RESIDENCE: Autumn 1635 sailed to Boston. Disenfranchised in Boston 15 Nov 1637, moved to Rhode Island. One of the signers of the compact establishing Rhode Island 7 Mar 1638.
William and his wife Mary accompanied Roger Williams and Dr. John Clarke to England. She was converted to Quakerism and upon her return to Boston she was imprisoned. She was permitted to go with her husband to Rhode Island but told never to return to Massachusetts. But she did return with William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson to Massachusetts. They were tried and convicted for rebellion and sedition. Robinson and Stevenson were executed. Mary was released to her son William Dyer and again told not to return to Massachusetts. But she returned to Boston May 1660. She was condemned to death 31 May 1660 and was executed 1 June 1660.
