Stephen Hopkins

(Abt 1579 - Bet 6 Jun 1644 and 17 Jul 1644)

RESIDENCE: Born in Upper Clatford, Hampshire, England. Was raised there and in Winchester. Sailed in 1609 on the Sea Venture headed to Jamestown, Virginia as a clerk to the chaplain of the ship, Richard Bucke. Was shipwrecked near Bermuda. He then argued against going ahead to Virginia, was tried for rebellion and was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. He was released by the governor, Sir Thomas Bates, upon the recommendation of the ship's captain, Christopher Newport and sailed on to Virginia with the others on 10 May 1610. They arrived in Jamestown on 24 May 1610. He returned to England by 1618 sailed on the Mayflower to Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts.
At the division of land in 1623, Hopkins received a six acre lot. He built the first wharf in Plymouth. House was at the intersection of Main and Leyden Streets, there is a plaque on the brick house which stands there now.
In 1638 he built the first house in Yarmouth then sold it in 1640 to Andrew Hallett, Jr.

Occupation: Had a shop in Hursley, Hampshire. Tanner and merchant

In 1637 Stephen was fined for allowing drinking and shuffleboard playing on a Sunday. In 1638 he was twice fined for selling beer at twice its value.
